Who Was Imam Ibn Majah?
Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Yazeed al-Rabei al-Qazwini also known as Imam Ibn Majah was one of the eminent scholars of Hadith. He was born in Qazvin, Iran in 824AD/209AH into a Sunni family, and was of Persian origin. He earned his recognition from the book Sunan Ibn Majah which is among the Al-Sihah al-Sittah and among the most important works of Ahadith.
Ibn Majah preferred to sit with scholars and traveled a lot from a very young age. It needs to be understood that universities weren’t available at that time and no one had the luxury of attending lectures one after the other to gain knowledge. They had to travel a lot to collect the finest of information from the best in their generation. The more the scholars traveled, their knowledge increased and more people benefitted from their knowledge.
Another reason for their travel was to verify the authenticity of the Ahadith. Collecting Ahadith from its sources had a great many benefits. One of them is that the authenticity of the Ahadith increases with the shortened chain of narrators and the Muhaddith gets the opportunity to be acquainted with the narrator in person.
Imam Ibn Majah studied under 319 scholars of Ahadith in his 15 years of travel and dedicated his entire life to acquiring, teaching, and preserving the Prophetic traditions. Imam Ibn Majah acquired vast knowledge in multiple branches of this religion. He wrote books on Hadith, Tafseer, and the history of the narrators of Hadith.
The book of Ibn Majah comprises of about 4000 ahadith, one may think that this book only comprises Ahadith relating to Fiqh. However, there are several chapters of Ahadith that do not have a relation with Fiqh e.g. book of interpretation of dreams, book of abstinence, and book of trials/fitan. Some of them will be mentioned here:
