Benefits of Surah Falaq recitation: Quran is not just the word of Allah SWT it is a complete guide for mankind, with many life lessons hidden in each ayah for those who can understand. Surah Falaq is the most renowned and one of the easiest Surah to remember in the Quran. Surah Falaq is only meant to protect ourselves from evil eyes and magic but teaches us some life lessons as well.
Surah Falaq (الفلق), meaning Daybreak or Dawn. It is the 113th Surah (chapter) in the Quran and has 5 ayahs (verses). It was among the early chapters revealed in Makkah (before the Hijrah). There is a difference of opinion between the fact that Surah Falaq is revealed in Makkah or Madinah. Are you a beginner and need to memorize the Surah, be sure to hear this?
What Is The Importance of Surah Falaq?
Why Was It Revealed? : The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was affected by black magic which led to the revelation of not just Surah Falaq but also Surah Nas, the 114th Surah in the Quran. Zayd ibn Arqam reported that a Jew by the name Labid bin Al-A’sam, cast a magical spell on the Prophet ﷺ.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had a Jewish servant boy he was approached by the Jew and was paid to help the magician, he stole a comb of the Prophet ﷺ and gave them some fallen hair from the Prophet ﷺ that was stuck in the teeth of the comb. The Jews used these to cast a spell of black magic on Allah’s Messenger ﷺ they made some kind of contraption tied knots on it and put it in the bottom of the well (well of Dharwan- famous well in Madinah) underneath a rock. This spell physically agitated the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he was losing sleep, some narrations say that Aisha RA narrated that he thought he had done something he hadn’t done it, or he did something and thought he hadn’t done it. His memory was being affected. Jibreel A.S came to him and revealed Al mu’awwidhatayn (المعوذتان) (Surahs Al-Falaq and An-Naas) then said to him, “Surely it was a Jew who cast this spell on you and the magical charm is in a certain well
The Prophet sent ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib to go and fetch the charm, which had 11 knots tied on to it. When he returned with it, the Prophet told him to untie the knots in it, one by one, and recite a verse from the two surahs, both Surah Falaq and Surah Nas together have 11 ayahs. When he did so, the Prophet ﷺ got up as if he had been released from being tied up.” (BUKHARI).
Reasons To Read Surah Falaq
By virtues, we mean the spiritual effects and rewards that reciting a certain surah brings. The importance of Surah Falaq is mentioned in a Hadith itself Uqbah bin Amir Al-Juhani رضي الله عنهnarrated that, the Messenger Of Allah ﷺ said:
Allah has revealed to me Ayat the likes of which have not been seen: “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind…” until the end of the Surat. “Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of Al-Falaq…” until the end of the Surah. TIRMIDHI
Several virtues of Surah Falaq have been mentioned in Hadith as well as the where, when, and how have been defined as well.
1- Surah Falaq Has No Parallel To It
SISILA TUL SAHIHA (AL BANI) is a book of authentic Hadiths, it mentions that Surah Falaq has no comparison to any Surah revealed even in the Books before Quran. The Messenger Of Allah ﷺ said
2-Surah Falaq An Integral Part Of Witr
Witr is the last prayer of the day, a nighttime prayer performed after Isha but before Fajr (dawn prayer). It is narrated by Ubayy ibn Ka’b رضي الله عنه :
Another version of the same Hadith also mentions:
In the third rak’ah he would recite: “Say, He is Allah, the One” (Surah Ikhlas), and “Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak” (Surah Nas), and “Say, I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind” (Surah Falaq). DAWUD
Another Hadith is also narrated, it may be Dai’f (weak) but mentions the same Sunnah regarding Witr. Abdul-‘Aziz bin Juraij said: “We asked ‘Aishah what the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to recite in Witr. She said:
3- Reciting Surah Falaq In Sickness
As Muslims, we believe sickness is a trial from Allah SWT and we need to pass that trial with distinction, following the ways of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When the Prophet of Allah ﷺ during his last illness wasn’t able to do so Aisha رضي الله عنه helped him. It is narrated by Aisha رضي الله عنه :
Surah Falaq was used as a cure for something as serious as a scorpion sting. It is mentioned in another narration in Tafsir Ibn Kathir, Ali رضي الله عنه said:
Once the Prophet of Allah was stung by a scorpion during the prayer. When the prayer was over, he remarked: Allah’s curse be on the scorpion, it neither spares a praying one or any other. He then called for water and salt and started rubbing the place, where the scorpion had stung, with saltwater and reciting Qul Ya Ayu Hul Kafiroon, Qul Huwal Allahu Ahd, Qul Aaúdhu Bi Rabbil Falaq, and Qul aaúdhu Bi Rabbin Nas, along with it. TABRAANI

4-Reciting Surah Falaq In Morning and Evening Duaás
Abdullah bin Khubaib (رضي الله عنه) reported, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me:
5-Reciting Surah Falaq Before Bedtime
It is narrated by Aisha رضي الله عنه :
6-Protection From Evil Eye And Black Magic
Black magic has long been a tool for the evil-minded to trouble people. Surah Nas and Surah Falaq are specifically revealed for dealing with such issues. Here is our detailed post on Symptoms Of Evil Eye In Islam & How To Remove Nazar In Islam.
7-Trying To Cure Magic Other Than Mu’awwidhatayn Was Disiked
Black magic and the evil eye cannot be ignored or denied, it is a fact and anyone can be a victim of it. But it is very customary to try to remove the ill effects by wearing rings of different kinds of stones or amulets or using eggs and red chilies to lessen the severity of it, which has been strongly disliked by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ :
The Prophet of Allah ﷺ disliked ten things: Yellow coloring, meaning khaluq, dyeing grey hair, trailing the lower garment, wearing a gold signet-ring, a woman decking herself before people who are not within the prohibited degrees, throwing dice, using spells except with the Mu’awwidhatan, wearing amulets, withdrawing the penis before the semen is discharged, in the case of a woman who is wife or not a wife, and having intercourse with a woman who is suckling a child; but he did not declare them to be prohibited. 8-Seek Refuge In Allah SWT From Darkness As It Settles
وَمِنْ شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ
And from the evil of darkness when it settles
This encourages us not to spend our free time with Shaitan, at night when the world is sleeping it is very easy to be led astray, by doing something which is forbidden. At the night the time for work is over and people are relatively free. That’s exactly the time when your mind easily becomes corrupted by Shaitan; an empty man’s brain is the devil’s workshop. You don’t always have to be busy, but a productive Muslim will also spend their ‘free’ time with acts that are not displeasing to Allah. You can listen to a lecture, talk to a relative to strengthen the ties of kinship or relax with your spouse, or just go to bed. Remember it is all about intention.
9- Recite Surah Falaq After Every Prayer
Uqbah ibn ‘Amir رضي الله عنه reported:
10- Protection Fron One Friday To The Next
This hadith is Da’eef (weak) but it will bring no harm if made a part of your life. It is reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
11- Surah Falaq For Every Purpose In Life
There are many hidden dangers in this world. So we need to ask Allah SWT to protect us from the evil of every created thing. All kinds of sickness, chronic and life-threatening diseases, mental illness. It is narrated Abdullah ibn Khubayb (رضي الله عنه):
12- Protection From Jeaolusy – The Most Destructive Emotion
Know that jealousy/envy (Hasad) is not only a great sin in Islam but it is considered the most discouraged emotion and the disease of the soul. A jealous person can cross any limit just to make people unhappy and to make people lose what Allah endowed upon them, just because they haven’t been blessed the same way. In the book of Al’Fawaid, a collection of wise sayings by Imam Ibn Al Qayam, Ibn Al-Qayyim said
The effectiveness of these surahs (Al-Falaq and An-Naas) is great to repel magic, evil eye, and the rest of the evils and the need for a slave to seek Allah’s protection from these two surahs is greater than his need for self, eating, drinking, and wearing a dress. AL FAWAI’D
13- Protection From Waswaas (Whispering Of Shaitan)
Waswaas (whispering of Shaitan) is described as a kind of sickness like any other ailment, it is any negative or evil information in the form of thoughts, ideas, and feelings that penetrate a person’s heart and mind from Shaitan. These negative thoughts and ideas, if not replaced with good positive thoughts suggested by Allah and His Prophet ﷺ, turn into delusion and force a person to do things that eventually create unwanted circumstances for them.
The Power of Surah Falaq
We are humans with weak Emaan, very vulnerable, and an easy target for Shaitan. Allah SWT has mentioned in the Quran that Shaitan is our worst enemy. We need constant protection from him. He deceives mankind in very different ways
Surah Falaq gives protection from three things:
- Evil creatures (people, animals, jinn, etc.) that come out at night
- Any sort of magic
- Enviers
And we cannot deny the fact that we need protection from the above all.
Beware of jealousy because jealousy consumes (destroys) virtues just as the fire consumes the firewood-ABU DAWUD
All protections are set in place only by following the ways of the Quran and Sunnah. No one is safe from Shaitan. May Allah (SWT) guide us to the right path and make us successful in this life and life hereafter. You should also go through these Authentic Islamic Duas for Protection of Children.
